I was wondering how I can find out what the true size of one of my FCP files (including all associated media) is? When I go into the finder and get the info on a file it says that it’s only 656K. The actual file I’m sure is many GB’s.

If the files are small enough, I would like to back them up as masters on DVD’s. Will this work, or am I completely out to lunch?

Most likely you’re looking at the project file. You need to look at the media files which should all be in the Capture Scratch folder, which you assigned in System Settings.

    All the best,

    Canadian Guy,

One concept that is hard for FCP beginners to comprehend is that the media you capture is not “in” FCP. Rather FCP is an interface used to capture, play and edit this media. The media is saved to your hard drive in the space you specfied when you set your capture scratch disk. FCP merely references this location when playing clips. Project files are typically small, and should always be archived when a project is finished, because of their size and importance. Hope that helps!
