I realize that most of the shots of that amazing film was done using blue screen, carefuly lightened and put together with 3D scenes. I’m not about to create such state of the art but would like to achieve similar effect.

I’ll be shooting evening city scenes. What I need to take care of during the shooting and what to do later in AE to achieve that graphic novel look?

Any ideas or guidelines will be apprechiated. Is it even possible?

Will you be shooting regular footage or greenscreen? One benefit the sin city guys had was that they were able to light however they wanted, because they were in studio. That being said, you would want a lot of hard edge lighting (around characters’ faces, etc.). Also, I’d shoot in day and make it look like night. It’ll just give you the good contrast that was present in sin city. A better camera would also give you better depth and range of grays when you go to bw in post, which was crucial in being able to achieve that black-and-white-but-still-great-looking. . . look.

Thanks for advice. I don’t think I could afford blue screen. I will shoot with Sony XL1. Is that good enough?

Have you checked the Cinematography COW forum? Search for “sin city” and “day for night”.
