    Hello,

I wonder if Vegas can do the following effect:

Initially I was thinking of recording a video where I would appear in front of a wall, and at the same time a video projector would project a second film (ex: a moving scenario) on the wall , and consequently on my body.

What i thought after, is that perhaps I can do it with a software video effect, that would superimpose the scenario film, just as it was a movie projector, where the “light” from the scenario movie would “mold” dynamically on my body and the background screen, just like if i was standing and moving between the movie projector and the wall.

I’m sorry I’m not using perhaps the correct terminology, i’m a relative beginner. I’d like to know if such effect exists on vegas or indeed in other video editing software. thank you.

Wow, that’s a toughy. To have the video mold around you like it was projected is the hard part. There’s projector location, the shadow it would cast. Unless the projector was to be in the same location as the camera where your shadow would be directly behind you and the video would not appear to mold around you, I can’t think of a way off the top of my head. Unless there’s a script one of the other guys knows about, I would have to say no with Vegas. Vegas is a great program but you may have better luck with After Effects for something like that. Thank you Danny,

Yes you are right, there are many parameters like location of the “projector” and the shadow it would produce. Like you suggested, it would be cool even on those “default” parameters (projector on the same spot as the camera and no shadow produced).

The purpose would be to mix the two videos in a more organic way so that one would influence the other as “light” superimposing, rather than for example the chroma key effect.

Any other ideas welcome, once again thank you.

I haven’t thought this through 100% for problems but two potential solutions come to mind about this.
#1 is to wear white clothing standing in front of a white wall. The projected image (high output projector needed for this) hits you and the wall at the same time.
#2 is to do it as a chromakey with you wearing all green or blue clothing standing in front of a green or blue wall. The chromakeyed image would wrap around you and hit the wall at the same time.

Hi Miguel, you could get very close using P.I.P. in Pan/Crop, where you superimpose the film over top of the footage of you in front of the wall. Adjust the opacity, so you can see you behind the film, then add a few effects like old film and flicker to taste. I do like Mike’s idea of a green screen with you all dressed in green, that would definitely get the film to wrap around you. Though you would have to shoot the exact movements twice, once dressed normally and once all in green. It would be hard to synchronize the two, but would look great if you could pull it off. I think it would work better, if you stood still. Good luck, let us know how you get on!

Thanks for your suggestions, I was experimenting for the last week. I found out some other problems. The main one is that I need a good “empty background” behind me and I still don’t have. Also I need a decent lighting that won’t make a huge shadow behind me so I will be able to use Chroma key, for example.

Until I have a studio setup organized I found a real projector, so I started making the background video on Vegas, then I filmed myself, playing bass guitar and recording the bass on Vegas, while sending the picture to the projector (video monitoring full-screen).

I send you the link for you, the effect is really cool. You will see that I used a lot of Vegas effects, perhaps too many, but I was experimenting with them, as I practically learn how to use this tool. I used them as I discovered them.

The cool thing about it is that I can “direct” the scenario according to my taste, and go with the musical changes.

Funny you will notice the geometry of my room’s ceiling, I thought it would distort the picture but actually if you place the camera on the same position as the projector, the 2D square image is perfectly reconstructed… I guess optics explains it easy…

You can now have an idea of the effect I desired, by adjusting the focus, i could even project the images on the bass, rather than the walls…

Hi Miguel, cool video so far! You’re right you need better lighting to get rid of that shadow, and a better backdrop would improve things as well. I still say you can achieve better results using Vegas’ PIP in Pan/Crop. Adjust the opacity, as well as the size of the screen overlay and you’ll have a much more Pro looking effect. Besides you’ll be able to control the background, and your overlaying footage much better, add filters etc. You do not need Greenscreening for this effect. Greenscreening is for changing the background behind you, where none of the footage overlays on your body. Glad to see you have great taste in music, so rare to see these days.
