  • Simple XSAN question?

Posted by Dan Miller on February 21, 2011 at 10:25 pm

We’re producing 3, 45minutes long TV shows. One episode of a single show per week… We have 10 MacPro editing machines, 11TB Xsan volume, fiber channel network and Finalcut Server 1.5 also installed. The question is:
Scartch Disks of 10 MacPros – is it better to be on 2nd local drive of MacPro (not boot drive) or to be on XSAN? Of course, each project/show would have its own scratch folder on Xsan. (not root xsan folder)
    I appreciate your help!

The answer is: it depends on your workflow!

In my opinion, yes, I would put the scratch disk on all of the LOCAL machines 2nd drive. However, it really depends on how you work and what you do. I always recommend that everyone work off of a LOCAL project and then save copies to the SAN for sharing. That way, you reduce the network traffic and still maintain your “sharing” capabilities… not to mention having TWO copies of the valuable project: one local and one global.

    Hope that helps.
