    Hello folks,

I’ve spent (WAY) too much time trying to come up with an elegant solution for a simple type animation.
I’m trying to add just 1 dimension, or movement of overshoot (or inertia) to a per-character position animation. What I would like is to see the type slide up from beneath its final position (one letter at a time) and then overshoot the final position by just a bit. I’ve created one that gets very close with 2 animations for position (one that does the initial move up, and one that then pushes the letters down), but this just isn’t quite right, nor is it easily duplicated for words of differing lengths. It lacks smoothness visually and efficiency where the workflow is concerned.
I’ve searched high and low and can’t seem to find anything (even for purchase) that will accomplish this.
It could be a case of me having my head too far down the rabbit hole and I’ve now passed up the obvious and easy answer.
Anyone have a suggestion? I feel like this should be uber simple, but I just can’t get it.
A great example of what I’m trying to emulate is here right at the front of Rob’s reel:

Thanks so much for the help,

    Jon

    Hey Jonathan,

Take a look at this …

    https://www.mattrunks.com/en/tutorials/after-effects/text-expression-selector

also mattrunks has a free preset which u can use …

    https://www.mattrunks.com/en/tutorials/after-effects/amortype

And if u wanna get deep into this Dan Ebberts has a useful article about bounce and overshoot …

    Thanks, Ashish.

This looks like a great tool and a perfect start for understanding type expressions.

I made a few adjustments and it looks exactly like Mr. Weink’s type. The one thing I can’t get however is
an alteration that would allow the animation to move from the center of the word to the edges. Since it’s all expression based (no range sliders) I’m a bit lost there. Do you have any thoughts on how to approach that change?

    Thanks for your time!

    Jon

    Jonathan

I don’t have that much understanding of expressions either …

But i think that the expression selector uses the overshoot expression by Dan ebberts and combines it with text Index value to produce that effect…

Try using another range selector along with that expression selector …

Good thought, Ashish, but that doesn’t seem to work. I would imagine the expression needs to be altered so that somehow it forces the animation to move from the center out (via the Index value). Given the timeline of the project I’m on I’ll have to be satisfied with the left to right movement for now.

Thanks again for your help! If I come across the solution, I’ll try to remember to post it here.

    Adios!
