  • Simple SIMPLE question about Vegas 9

Posted by Andy Abulafia on September 16, 2011 at 7:26 pm

Hi everyone, I have the simplest of requirements.

    my stuff:

    – Sony Camcorder AVCHD Tg5V.
    – Home video clips (.mts) (1080i)
    – Vegas 8
    – media players – Popcorn hour, ASUS oPlay, WDTv Live

    requirement

    – join clips together into a format that is AS GOOD AS the original .MTS clips
    – Rendered file to be efficient if possible (i.e. should not needlessly render to x10 times original size for example to retain quality)
    – Rendered file to be ‘standard’ – e.g. blu ray compliant should I be able go down that road in future and make disks

    questions

    – Can this be achieved in Vegas 8 and if so – what format do I save in, do I use mainconcept? Do I save as Sony AVC?
    – If not – do i really need to upgrade to (say) Vegas 9? I cannot quite swing to a Vegas 10 upgrade today

[andy abulafia] “- join clips together into a format that is AS GOOD AS the original .MTS clips”

Vegas does not “smart render” AVCHD so you will have to re-render to join them in Vegas.

If all you want to do is join MTS files together, you don’t need Vegas at all. Just use a free utility like tsMuxeR.

[andy abulafia] “- Rendered file to be efficient if possible (i.e. should not needlessly render to x10 times original size for example to retain quality)”

Render to Sony AVC using the AVCHD 1920×1080-60i template and it will render to the same format as your original files.

AVCHD is a Blu-ray format so no worries there.

Check and see if that AVCHD template is in Vegas Pro 8. I’m using 10.

There is no upgrade to 9. Vegas Pro 9 has been discontinued and is no longer available for sale nor supported by Sony. The only upgrades are to 10 and 11 has just been announced.

If you have registered your Version 8 software, then you should be receiving an upgrade letter when Version 11 is released. This letter has historically had a brief discount price for current users. Also, SCS made some significant improvements in how AVCHD is handled in Version 10.

Filesize and Quality are directly controlled by the encoded bitrate, which is under your control. Higher bitrate=higher quality=larger encoded file size.

Not sure why you can’t see this option.

hey thanks but I have no idea how to force it to 1920×1080…
any other ideas? i’ve tried tinkering with the project template, the project settings….

the ONLY way I can get to 1920×1080 is to use the Mainconcept and create an m2ts or mts file. Is that as good as the Sony AVC?

And… one more stupid question for you guys… what’s the practical differnce between AVC and AVCHD ….

hi Mike, what version of Vegas are you running? Currently I am running 8.0c x64. Sorry to keep posting multiple questions, but I cannot seem to edit an existing question 🙂

[andy abulafia] “hi Mike, what version of Vegas are you running?”

Andy, that screen shot came from Pro 8.0c on a 32-bit XP Pro machine.

Hi Mike. OK … first off apologies I am actually running 8.1 not 8.0c (just realized, duh).

so anyway… below is the CLOSEST I could get to your setting. Note it is AVC not AVCHD (your setting) – with AVCHD selected I simply cannot customize frame rate (it only allows 1440.1080). Moreover it renders a file which is unplayable on VLC or Microsoft media Player. I manually bumped up size to 1920.1080 and bps to 16meg.

Below are my screenshots. Question is – – do you think my issue is a symptom of 8.1? Wondering….should I revert back to 8.0c?

    thanks for your time,
    aa

[andy abulafia] ” Question is – – do you think my issue is a symptom of 8.1?”

8.1 was Sony’s first experience with 64-bit and, by all accounts, left a lot to be desired 🙁

    “Wondering….should I revert back to 8.0c?”

Since one is 64-bit and the other is 32-bit, you should be able to install both on the same computer.
I know you can do that with the 32 and 64-bit versions of Pro 9 and Pro 10 but I have no idea whether you can do this with Pro 8.
You have nothing to lose by trying except installation time.
