  • Simple question about editing in ProRes 422 (Proxy)

Posted by Reuben Evans on August 16, 2010 at 6:01 pm

    Hi,
This is a bit of a noob question, but I was reading on Apple site about the editing process on “Eat, Pray, Love.” It contained the following portion:

“The editors found an efficient solution in ProRes 422 (Proxy), a new version of the Apple ProRes codec introduced with Final Cut Pro 7. As soon as dailies arrived from EFILM, Assistant Editor Doc Crotzer would transcode the files from ProRes 422 (HQ) to ProRes 422 (Proxy), organize the footage into bins, and prepare the material for editing….

We were able to cut in Proxy and in a few simple keystrokes be reconnected in ProRes 422 (HQ) to output for a screening.”

Could anybody give me a simple explanation of how to edit with the lower quality (proxy) codec if I have imported my files using log and transfer into ProRes 422 (HQ) and then what would be the ” few simple keystrokes be reconnected in ProRes 422 (HQ) to output for a screening.” I guess I asking how you reconnect to the original res files when it is time to send the timeline to Compressor.

    Thank you!

    1. Capture/Import as ProRes HQ to MEDIA DRIVE 1. This might be the large raid…large enough to hold all of this footage.

    2. Use the Media Manager to RECOMPRESS to MEDIA DRIVE 2. This might be a smaller drive that connects via firewire. ALL the clip names will remain the same, and the pixel dimensions are the same.

    3. Take MEDIA DRIVE 1 offline. Edit with the ProRes Proxy footage.

    4. Lock picture.

    5. Take MEDIA DRIVE 2 offline, connect MEDIA DRIVE 1.

    6. Open the project. When it asks “Where is the media?” Choose to RECONNECT to the MEDIA DRIVE 1. FCP will find the footage and reconnect.

    Shane,

I shoot on a Panasonic, DVCPROHD. Can I use the process you described above as well, or do I have to import as ProRes HD to be able to covert to ProRes Proxy later?
