  • Simple, one or two button, point and shoot video camera for my mom?

Posted by Angelo Mike on February 13, 2014 at 3:32 pm

I’m getting a camera for my mom to shoot videos when I’m not around. She’s never used a computer in her life and needs a very simple camera. If Flip Cams were still around I might get her one of those.

So I’m thinking a small camcorder, like a Sony Handycam or a Canon Vixia. It just has to be very simple, point and shoot, and the video and audio have to be automated so she can’t mess it up. I don’t want her to have to deal with data management or any camera settings so she can just turn on the camera and press record. I don’t want her to even be able to mess up the picture (which she’s sure to do) if there are more easily accessible features.

Is a Go Pro worth getting? Does anyone recommend anything else? Maybe an old Flip Cam? Or just a small camcorder? That might have more storage space for video and a better picture.

The small Kodak’s are awesome. Got my son one 2 years ago and the quality is great. Even has external mic jack! This new model gets great reviews: https://www.amazon.com/Kodak-PlayFull-Zi12-Video-Camera/dp/B006L6ZU84/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1392317028&sr=8-2&keywords=kodak+video+camera

My co-worker purchased the waterproof Kodak to record his son’s football games and he loves it.

I’ve used one of the waterproof Kodak ones similar to this before and considered it. Maybe I’ll get it. There’s always a chance my mom will press a button that will mess up a video and I’ll be in no position to help her.

Edit: I’m reading a few negative things about it, though. No AC adapter included, the lens must be moved to the side, and the battery only lasts for 30 minutes. All things that are sure to fail my mom. The video quality looks good, though, and the audio is fine.

I went with an older model that should arrive in a few days. The reviews were pretty good, it takes SD cards, you don’t have to turn it sideways (I believe), and the battery lasts about 2 hours.
