  • Simple Mystery: Shadow rendering only in a kind of “bounding box”

Posted by Jacob Giacometti on January 23, 2018 at 8:32 pm

    Hello,

I made a little video to show the weird behaviour I am having a problem with in AE CC 2014 (youtube link) :
    https://youtu.be/413wHzM7Ueg

Basically, the shadow of a shape is rendering on the solid behind it within what seems to be a “bounding box” when I parent it to another layer. As soon as I unparent it, although it does not change position, the shadows renders fully normally. There are no layers in between.

I have been trying to figure this out for a while now, I am very curious of your theories.

    Thanks !

Yeah ok but isn’t this supposed not to do that ?
The actual project is more complex than this stripped down version, I would like to keep the text parented to the logo ????

    ????
OK, so at least we agree this is not normal and it’s not just me missing something ?

Have you tried increasing the shadow map resolution? go into composition options, on the 3d tab, go into options…

I had indeed tried increasing it to the max, 4000, and saw no change.
After your comment, I checked it again, and what a surprise when setting it back to the default “comp size” fixed the problem ????
The shadow doesn’t render exactly as smoothly as it does when the layer is unparented, go figure, but at least now it’s much closer and doesn’t look as bad.
    Thank you nice call!

OK MY BAD why can’t we edit a post by the way ?!
It was fixed by setting it to the LOWEST value, 250, not comp size. Go figure even more. ????

OK actually it’s still not great it’s just that it’s less visible at lower shadow map resolution that’s all.
I’m going to precomp it ????????
Why something so simple not even working after 8297428392 versions of after effects !! ????

Can you post a simplified AEP that we can take a look at? I’d be curious to replicate this.
