    I really can’t believe I can’t figure this out.

My comp has two layers, a shape layer that is a single, maybe 5 pixel wide vertical line, and a text layer with the text positioned to the right of the line. I want the text to start invisible, and then slide left and become visible as it crosses the line.

Inverted mask on the text layer moves with the layer. I need the mask to stay put.

Mask on an adjustment layer above the text layer does nothing at all.

I know I’m gonna kick myself when I get the answer.

If the text is done in AE, all you need to do after you set your mask is to animate the text position (animate properties) and not the layer (of the text). Another way is if you animate the text, precomp the layer and then set your mask.

Yes! Thank you. Not too used to text animations yet. The other way (though your solution is much simpler) I found is to create a solid, add the mask to the solid and use the solid as a track matte for the text layer.
