simple character animation
Posted by Heriberto Levin on April 20, 2006 at 12:57 pmHello,
I am trying to animate a simple caracter without mocca…is there a cheaper alternative to mocca or can I do with standard bones?
no IK needed basically all he needs to do is wave a hand and maybe the bow the head a little. I tryied with standard bones but cant seem to isolate vertices on each bone….any ideas are more than welcomeHeriberto Levin replied 20 years ago 4 Members · 6 Replies -

If you want to get into Character animation, then you should definetly get Cactus Dan

April 20, 2006 at 3:00 pmFirst of all I also love Cactus Dan’s IK/Constraint/Morph tools. They are worth every cent many times over. The constraints alone add what C4D should have built in in the first place.
I’ve never used C4D w/o Mocca installed so I don’t know what is part of it, but I believe you can still use bones with vertex maps without it. I think only Claude-bonet is part of Mocca.
So put your bones in and grab points or polys and set vertex maps on them. Then add restriction tags to each bone with the respective vertex map so the bone is limited to that part of the mesh.
Then lastly, don’t bother with IK. Just animate using FK (Just rotating the bones directly)

April 20, 2006 at 3:30 pmDoes anybody know how will cactus dan will perform without mocca??
I really cannot buy mocca…we never do character animation…
we just need to have a character do some simple animation..
but I’m afraid to do with bend modifiers because maybe moving a hand will be easy
but the head and what if the client wants a foot…basically I need do a very basic rig or something
thanks

April 20, 2006 at 6:37 pmIt should work w/o Mocca at all. Mocca makes bone setup easier with the bone tool, but you should be able to use the regular bones, vertex maps and Cactus Dan tools.
I own Mocca and All I use is Cactus Dan’s stuff instead. I do use the Mocca Bone tool to place the bones, but it isn’t necessary.
His Morph tools to me smoke the posemixer way of doing facial morphs in C4D. I don’t know jack about rigging, but the CD tools have macros that are practically automatic in setting up rigs.

April 20, 2006 at 8:11 pmAs Chris said above, you can do basic character animation without Mocca. You have to set up vertex maps for the bones and then place a restriction tag on each bone referencing its vertex map. There should be some tutorials covering this on Maxon’s website.
