Simple Audio Question

Hi there
I seem to have trouble with this (I come from Premiere Pro)
When I change automation on and to touch or latch, I then play the timeline and adjust the volume as it goes. However, when I come to play it again – it still has the original audio levels. (I am trying to fade up and down some background music at various points as I listen to it play) Must be something real simple I am missing.
BTW – do I need to go to Vegas 8 to accomplish the above across more than one audio track?

All audio tracks may be automated.
You’re putting the track back into READ mode after writing?

Yes I was Doh.. Got the hang of it now. This as all sooo different from Premiere Pro – but I like it! Many thanks
