Activity Forums VEGAS Pro SIMPLE alpha channel composite (??)

My apologies if this is really basic, but I’ve just spent two hours on a CC forum search and the Vegas help section with no help, and I’m running out of time with my client waiting.

    Here’s what I have:

    (1) Footage of students walking in hallway on lower video track.

    (2) On track above I have an animated title. This animated title is white text on black background, and it has an embedded alpha channel that is the title itself plus some soft dropshadowing that takes some of the black with it for the composite.

All I’m trying to do is see the title with its built-in shadow (that is created by its alpha channel) over the top of the students footage.

I chose “Compositing Mode” on the title layer and “>Source Alpha” but just get the title layer (white text on black) showing. I tried “Add”, but just get what looks like a luminance key from just the white off the black (no dropshadow, of course).

This has to be one of the most basic compositing tasks I can think of, but I’m obviously missing something. Thanks for your help!!!!

Okay, found it on YouTube. So… new question: If the answer is to “RT CLK > Properties > Media > Alpha Channel”, is there a particular reason it’s so removed from where all the other logically-placed tools are for doing this?

Yes. The Alpha Channel is a property of the MEDIA not the TRACK. It only make sense to change this as either a property of the media or the event on a track which contains the media and so those are the two places that you can change it. It make sense once you understand what an alpha channel is. Not all media has an alpha channel so it’s a media attribute that can be off or on in any number of alpha channel modes.
