I need to create a 3D Softball Spinning…without using a higher end 3d program, can I build that look inside AE alone…no zaxwerks! Just After Effects.??? Thanks in advance.

    CC Sphere is your friend.

Can I spin the CC spere 360 degrees and still see the “Back” side??

Option 1: Use the CC sphere effect, under the “perspective” effects menu. First, create a comp twice as wide as it is tall, and draw the baseball skin on a rectangular layer that fits that comp. then drag that comp into your final comp, and apply Sphere to that comp-within-a-comp. You won’t be able to do fancy camera moves with it, because it doesn’t respect AE’s camera, so you’ll have to use the wussy controls within the effect. CC sphere is in the Cycore folder on the install disc. Hopefully you have a version of AE that includes it.

Option 2: Make or find a baseball image (the circle with two curved lines) and drag it into your comp. Make the layer 3D, and set its layer>transform>auto-orient to orient towards camera. You’re making a disc that always faces camera, which sort of looks like a ball. But this works with AE’s 3D camera.

    Anybody else?

Read my post below. You have to basically unwrap a baseball in your mind and draw that image on the long rectangular image which is then wrapped around the ball by CC sphere. This is called spherical texture mapping.

You’ll have to make sure the ends of the map match, so you’ll see no seam on the ball.

Option 2 can be a really quick cheat, though. It’s good to keep it in mind. 🙂
