I’m really getting tired of people in the broadcast industry telling me how much better and more professional every other video editing program out there is so much better than what I’m using and that Vegas Pro is a toy.

    I wish they’d shut up.
    Sorry for the rant.

    Yeah!
It’s like that in everything I have ever done:

    1) Music – Jazz is better than rock, classical is supreme, hip hop is noise…blah, blah, blah..
    2) Audio editors – Pro-tools is the must, Sonar is 64 bit, Cubase uses 32 bit native recording files…blah blah blah
    3) PC-Mac – Mac rules supreme, all others and insolent, PC are so upgradable, Macs never crash or get viruses, PC’s allow you to tweek more….blah, blah, blah
    4) Video – You use VEGAS!!!, FCP is all I use, AVID is what studios use, Premiere works with all other Adobe formats soo well…BLAH, Blah, blah!!!

I don’t care if you use an 8 core Xeon with 2000000 GB of ram and 50000000 giga flops of HD storage, or a P4 with 512 MB,and 35 Gig HD or even a burnt stick and papyrus… if it sounds great, looks great and people enjoy it..guess what THAT IS THE POINT!!! All else is just semantics!!

Thanks for listening to MY rant!!

    Also-
Users who tear Vegas up one side and down the other after stating they have already switched to a “Better, Bigger, Sexier, Mind Numbingly Faster” NLE. And now the birds are always singing, the sun is always shining, the children are always playing and all is right with the world.
But they’ll still log on to Vegas forums-find a user with a question or a problem- and instead of helping- go on and on about the “Bigger, Better,Sexier, etc.etc.etc.” NLE. I saw that exact thing on another Vegas forum yesterday.
If you dislike Vegas and are already using another video editor go bother the people in those forums.
    But that’s just my opinion.

Would that they would shut up. But, alas, it is not to be. I now use both Sony Vegas and Final Cut Pro. The fact is that it really doesn’t matter what software is used to cut a program–every high end program can do everything. But that is not the view of many clients. Also, if you need to collaborate with other editors, often having FCP expertise is an asset.

Thats why I’m getting into Avid MC. Not leaving Vegas, but need to collaborate better with others.

Yeah, I agree. Particularly given that I use Vegas, play rock music, and use a PC.. and of course, Vegas. Ok, I also own 64-bit Sonar 🙂 And yet more often that not, find myself mixing in Vegas. Oh, and yeah, I also own a Panny AG-HMC40, which replaced a Sony HVR-A1, so I get beat up over the “consumery” camcorder. And that’s before I even mention a few consumer models I also use from time to time (the Sanyo Xacti sucks at everything else, but it’s damn fine video for $400).

And of course, you can counter many of these arguments. And they won’t go away. In part, it’s what you’re used to — if I’m more effective in Vegas, or can’t afford an $6000 camcorder, or whatever, that doesn’t mean I’m jealous of your “better” stuff. It’s also what’s better FOR ME… I really don’t want a 12lbs camcorder, I really do believe that, having used just about everything, Vegas suits me best. And really, how is YOUR suprior NLE at audio?

But you know, this is part of the human experience. There’s also a “mine” vs. “your” out there. Before I got into video, it was all Canon vs. Nikon for years (I had Olympus, back in the 70s and 80s), PC vs. Mac (I had Amigas), Ford vs. Chevy, whatever. You spend some not-insignificant cash to become a member of a quasi-exclusive club, and many people feel the need to preach the virtues and deny those of your chosen club, even when they’re not so familiar with that club. That’s ok to a point… I don’t mind learning (and for the record, I have both Nikon and Canon cameras today, I’ve had JVC, Sony, Canon, and Panasonic camcorders… but since Apple knocked my “Mac Clone” company, PIOS AG, out of the Mac business, I’ll have no more interest in Apple products).

It also helps to not be so full of yourself. Someone coming at me with Avid and Protools and XDCAMs is probably more dependent on these for a living than I am with my gear. I guess Elvis Costello put is well: “I used to get disgusted, now I try to be amused”… now, don’t beat me up with claims you have a better Elvis!

As far as music goes, though.. I’m totally happy with my Martin D15… the only way you’ll best me there is with a better Martin!

All NLE’s are tools, like hammers, and saws. It’s the thing you make with them, not the tool itself. No one cares about what tool someone used to make a thing, beyond the people doing the marketing… being good with your tools is the only thing that matters.

    night all…
