Shuddering during photo Panning
Hi all,
I have read not only here but several other sites and watched numerous youtube videos on settings that will prevent shuddering while panning photographs when converted to video.
Instead of getting a smooth progression there seems to be a lagging/shuddering of movement through the viewing process.
Based on the this and other forums including various youtube videos I have tried a multitude of variations. These include:
1. Varying the Field order
2. Blend Field options and other for deinterlace method
3. Using .png images
4. Using numerous variations of pixel ratio as mentioned in various forums
5. Using various file size from 200k to 1meg
6. Even on short 3-4 slide videos (which has been my test bed)this problem occurs
7. Numerous templates right down to 480×360 and through to maximum1920x1080The only thing that seems to reduce BUT NOT STOP this shuddering effect is to run the pan extremely slowly…again, this only reduces its apparent inclusion and is impractical because it greatly limits possible effects.
I have posted three of these tests on a test-bed website but am unsure if I am allowed to offer that here or if my description of the problem and remedies attempted make sense.
Finally, my computer runs Dual 8800GTX (1 gig) video cards and other similar videos produced by others seem to run perfectly using the same effect…although I do not know what software created the vids.
One final detail that may add something to this college of knowledge is that I have been using .wvm for each of these tests. Ultimately, I want a video that can be seen by the widest audience so if a change of formats that still allows the i-pad world etc to view the result exists I am happy to change this aspect.

Have you tried adding smoothness to keyframes?
I think this shuddering thing might be due to the absence of motion blur. Motion blur makes shots sort of ‘fluid’ and smooth. It’d probably be really difficult to add in Vegas though…

I’ve done at least 100 slide shows (for DVD) and have never had the kinds of problems you’re experiencing.
If possible, post one of your test veg files (we can substitute our own pictures) so that we can look at it in an attempt to solve your problems.BTW, MP4 would probably be a better mass distribution format, especially for sites like YouTube and Vimeo and devices like an iPod/iPad.

The second, third and fourth vids are ALL the same except using different settings….I am currently up to variation 16 but this is reasonable representative. The first vid is a different sample but again you will note the jitters.
I will try the Nigel’s idea of the right click…

I have never seen moves that jumpy.
Please post a veg file for a project so that we can take a look at it and see what’s going on. -

The only time I experienced that was when one of my templates was accidentally set to ‘none’ instead of blend for the interlace setting, but you have already tried that.
I use jpeg’s, though, typically between 240 and 300 dpi, and varying in size from 1.5 MB to 5 MB each. Are you able to try it with jpeg’s to see if the judderring effect remains?

Hi Nigel and thanks for the help.
The examples you have looked at were all using jpgs ranging from about 1m each. I was told directly by Sony to not exceed 1meg when I called them because slideshows were freezing during rendering.
Do you think I should try some high rez examples and keep my fingers crossed that the platform doesn’t freeze?

Mike, your file did end up in the right place.
I took a look at it and have some questions and suggestions.
First of all, how big (in pixels) are the stills?
If they’re more than 2X your project properties, use a free app like IrfanView to shrink them down in size as that will help.
I substituted some of my own images to see what would happen.
What I did notice was that,if you’re doing a lot of movement like you did, you need to leave them up for longer than 5 seconds.
I stretched each one out to 10 seconds, adjusted the keyframes accordingly and it looked a lot better.
If 10 seconds is too long, think about restricting the movement so that it doesn’t cover such a large area of expanding the size of it (I hope that last part makes sense to you).
Lastly, I question the need for the middle keyframe as there is very little movement between it and the last one.
Delete it and see if that helps. -

I thought you were using png’s as described in your first post. I have not had any issues with jpeg sizes, even up to 8+ MB. I use photographs from wedding videographers and do not use anything less than 240 dpi images.
If I am given 1MB files, they tend to be lower quality preview images and are generally unsuitable as they start to introduce jagged edges. The lower quality images you are using may explain the shuddering as there is less data for Vegas to work with.
Have you tried higher quality images?
