show time of selected parts of the timeline

Look underneath the timeline and it will show the time of selection.

The range select or marking an In or an Out is step one.

Step two is to click TWICE on the HUD. (time display in the center of the screen) – the display will show you the elapsed time of the resulting range.

(when the HUD shows the range brackets, the display shows the duration of the range.)

Also, ctrl+D displays duration in the center display if the bottom of the sequence doesn’t work. There’s been a bug in the past where it quits showing selection duration down there.

crtl-d is a good option – I mostly use it.

Also if a clip is selected and the Inspector is open you see the duration of the selected clip in the upper right of the Inspector window.

So there are many ways.
