Shouldn’t I be able to edit video easily on this machine?!
I am a documentary film maker, I edit in vegas 13.0 on win 8.1, and I’m now consistently having problems playing back sections from the timeline, previewing.
But shouldn’t I be able to preview any video, even HD, with specs like these?!Lenovo Thinkpad Y580 with Intel Core i7 3630QM CPU 2.4ghz, 8gb DDR3 RAM, Nvidia Geforce GTX 660M and Intel HD Graphics 4000, 1TB HDD (loads of space and not fragmented!), 1920x1080screen
I am on Vegas 13.0. The clips I am currently editing came out of a Canon T2i and were not transcoded (so they are Quicktime Mov container, AVC video stream @ 47.1 MBPSbps).
I even made half resolution versions, with the same encoding parameters, to facilitate smooth editing and even these don’t play back well!I have tried everything recommended in the forums, but I honestly think this machine shouldn’t need those workarounds and fixes (such as previewing at Draft resolution, and pre-rendering, or transcoding to a different codec before editing).
I do not think that curtailing the software is ever a solution to anything, I should be able to use all the capabilities of the program on this machine!I believe Vegas is set up correctly ….. “GPU acceleration of video processing” is set to the Nvidia card. “Dynamic Ram Preview” is set at 4096 (I don’t run other programs when I am editing). I notice “preview device” doesn’t give me the option of using the Nvidia.
I had the latest drivers for the video cards and that didn’t help (it doesn’t make sense to keep updating drivers while my computer remains the same, if old drivers worked perfectly well then there should be no need to change them). I don’t get updates from Windows, but the same logic applies (the program was working much better once)
I remember getting much better performance in Vegas when the computer was new 3 years ago, even a year ago.
Could this be due to the computer overheating? Why would performance degrade over time? Perhaps there is something essential to set up in the Nvidia Control Panel?
Any ideas from professional editors?
Thanks
