  • Should/can there be an .mov extension be put at capture?

    Hi there,

I am successfully running FCP 5.0.4 on a G5 along with a DeckLink. I use FCP as an off-line system, and later on-line on another system/software via an FCP-XML Export.

To make a long story short, the XML Import on the on-line system is thrown off on the nature of some VTR-captured clips by the fact that there is no “.mov” extension in their filename.

And indeed, I see that by default, there does not seem to be an .mov extension added to all VTR captures using an FCP+Decklink set-up.

So, a few questions perk up in my mind, hopefully some of you have the answers!

    1) Is this the normal/desired behavior for any captures in FCP, may the come from firewire or specialized cards such as the Decklink or an AJA?

    2) Normal/desired behavior or not, is there any way, in FCP or the Decklink preferences, to have an .mov extension be added by default?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

    Alain

As a workaround, you could use Automator to add a .mov extension to a batch of files.

    Hi Alan,

Thanks for the suggestion. I had thought of that, and that will do fine for the current files that have been captured like that. But I’m looking forward to change this behavior for future projects, if possible…

I agree it really sucks, I’ve had some terrible times renaming files by hand to add the extension, I don’t think it’s a decklink problem, just final cut pro doing things really badly.
PS I know I could use automator or some file naming application but does anyone know how to get rid of the “Do you really want to change the extension?” dialogue? On Panther I was able to get rid of it somehow but since Tiger I haven’t been able to and it drives me mental.
