I am a student and am debating whether to purchase fincal cut studio 2.. does anyone know if a newer version will be released anytime soon? I’d rather wait if so.

Not before April and NAB in Las Vegas at the earliest. Generally a new version is shown there and then it will ship anytime between June and September.

January 22, 2008 at 10:07 pmWhen do you need it? Do you need it now? Then buy it now. If you can afford to wait, then wait for NAB in April.
BTW, the tax code favors the buying of software. You may not have had any reason to consider this up till now, but when you’re self employed or own a business, this is very important.

January 22, 2008 at 11:00 pmWell I’m editing a film now and can use my school, but I rather edit at home and avoid school hours and lousy computers. What is NAB? Thanks!

It’s a big convention in Las Vegas in April. Apple has traditionally made FCP announcements at the convention.

January 23, 2008 at 11:20 amVersion 6.0 was released on last NAB, and it was a major upgrade. I don’t think we will see a new version until next year. (this year might be the year of xsan and finalcut server)

The National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas each April. Europe also has a show called the IBC, International Broadcasters Convention which I believe is in September.
But Apple makes all of their big FCP related announcements at NAB, at least they have to date.

January 23, 2008 at 5:58 pmI disagree. There will need to be a major update to DVDSP to support new Blu-ray authoring functionality. I also think that Color and FCP need some updates. I would also expect Apple to have extensive support for the RED ONE.
We could also see the new Shake this year too, but that’s probably still up in the air.
Anyway, that’s just my opinion.

Personally, I think FCP is just going to get some updates, not a major overhaul. RED support is something that is extremely weak right now, but that’s being driven by RED more than Apple. They have been so concerned with getting the camera out, they are finally getting over to dealing with Post Production. We’ve been discovering that first hand.

Let’s hope. Last I heard it had a working title of Phenomenon but that was two years ago I believe. Zippo since then.

January 23, 2008 at 7:14 pmIt could be an update like FCP 4.5 was. Free, but still an upgrade.
But here is my dream list for fun:
-R3D Red support for color and FCP
-PRORES 444 specifically for finishing from RED (why would they call PRORES “422” if there wasn’t going to be a ProRes 444)
-Advanced Blu-ray authoring in DVDSP
-Upgraded the columns in FCP to be easier to use
-2:3 pulldown adding, detecting and removing in FCP
-True project sharing with FCP Server-Russ
