  • should i use .mov lossless??

Posted by Kutterup on June 21, 2005 at 12:39 pm

ok i have buddy that needs to give me some files for re-editing. i work on a pc using vegas and after effects (i go back and forth alot between the two programs).

now my friend works on a mac and he has footage from imoive and FCP.

now my question is should he give me the footage as .mov or .mov lossless?
when i was in school we worked on macs and i was always told to simply keep everything in quicktime formatt but then i come to learn about lossless and like i said before i go back and forth between my NLE and AE (i mean a lot). so should i always make sure im using a lossless or is simply having a .mov good enough??

sorry if i sound stupid 🙂

    well..your a little confused i think…
because you can have an mov that is lossless.
when you say lossless you are just saying that there is no compression on it or the compressor you are using does not lose any information.
So when you say you’re using a .mov…i’m guessin you’re puttin some compression on it. Which you should never do until the very last stage, when you want to make a web version or for other outputs.(dvd, etc.)
But you should always render everything with a lossless compression or no compression at all.

so you can use quicktimes, but when rendering out of AE…just set the compressor to “None”
thus giving you a lossless clip.

    hope this helps.

Lossless..def. – will not lose any data, color, information, etc.
    lossy – will lose data.etc.

    ok thanks,
well let me ask u this, i capture .avi, but for some reason i cant use the raw captured file and import into AE until i render it in my NLE (which i then render as .mov and keep it that way until im done with all my work and render out to mpeg2 for DVD).

so do u know if there is a way to make .avi lossless or a way for a pc to capture in quicktime formatt?

what program are you using to capture??

And whatever type of avi. your captureing to must not be readable to AE..well obviously…

and as for makin an avi lossless you can render out of ae an avi with no compression.
same way you would with a quicktime.
And if i was you …i’d capture my footage as a image sequence and then convert to a quicktime if you want.

but yes you can capture as a quicktime…in premiere.

    well thanks josh.
well i capture with my wintv card software (i know i know dont make fun but its all i have to work with right now and really its not that bad).
now i edit in vegas but i found that i run into few (if any) problems capturing right from the wintv software.

and i used to use premiere but i really cant stand it, so what would be another way for me to capture a image seq and/or as quicktime?
