Getting ready to populate an 8 bay Qnap. Looking at either WD gold or Red Pro drives. Is it worth it for me to buy these in batches from different outlets? 8 different purchases….2×4 different purchases…4×2 different purchases?
(I guess I would get a spare as well)

Prices are pretty consistent up here from a few different vendors, so I wouldn’t be saving money or spending more, except maybe shipping, but is it a concern to buy everything at once? I know the theory, but I’m assuming if I bought a fully stocked raid from Qnap, it would all have 1 big batch of drives in it. (As I’m sure my pegassys does right now).

no – just buy them from one dealer all at one time. You will have no issues. The WD and HGST drives are made in the same factory in Thailand. You will be fine. These are very very reliable drives. But buy a spare drive anyway, just in case.
