Should I Sell my 5DM2 used?
I have been using a Canon 5DM2 and lenses for some light studio work. I just bought a Roland VR-50HD HDMI/SDI mixer, and will probably be mixing HDMI/SDI with the mixer from now on–so I am wondering if there is some reason I should not to liquidate my 5DM2, and use the money for something else.
I thought I should ask you guys, because you would be able to tell me if there is some reason to hang onto the glass, etc, and maybe just sell the camera body? Thanks.Norman Willis

If you don’t need the latest greatest, it a great camera. You can even download Magic Lantern and shoot RAW (albeit only 12 minutes takes max).
If you are planning to stay with Canon, keep the glass. Though if you do go with another company, there are quite a few EF adapters so, good glass is good glass. Would I jump to a Canon 5D mark iii? I’d probably wait to see what Canon announces in September. Everything seems to be going 4K. It’s a buzz word and 1920×1080 is still fine, but if you need to reposition a shot in post, 4K has more head room.

Warren, thanks. I have been focused elsewhere. What is the deal with a 5dm3? Can it shoot uncompressed continuously (or what benefits does it offer)? And what is the bandwidth out of the HDMI port?
I am using Canon HF-S10 cameras to send an uncompressed HDMI signal out the side. The are simple prosumer cameras, but the glass and the image is very pretty. I need to shoot for long periods (up to 2 hours at a time). The main reason I think I would upgrade cameras would be to convert to SDI (for longer cable runs).

The Mark iii can only shoot 29:59. It’s a EU regulation or they have to call it a camcorder and a tax issue.
The Mark iii does shoot clean out through the HDMI port, so you can in theory go into live view and shoot forever into a third party recorder, say a Atmos or AJA product. You just have to set the camera to never sleep or what ever Canon calls the auto sleep mode, I forget.
If you want to shoot RAW with Magic Lantern, the results are spectacular at 14 bit and loads of latitude, but you can only shoot to fast CF cards and are again limited to 29:59.

Wow. So you are saying that if I sell my 5dm2 body for a 5dm3 body and shut off auto-sleep, I can shoot uncompressed hdmi to my AJA Kona LHi in studio for a perfectly clean 4k shot?

No 4K. Only at 1920×1080 and 8bit clean out. Though Atmos told me at Cinegear that their Ninja does some sort of hocus pocus to get 10bit ProRes. Not sure how though.

So if I can get uncompressed from my HF-S10’s, then I am better off going out the side of my HF-S10’s?

I don’t know what the HF-S10 shoots. I have to say the 8bit out of the clean HDMI from the Mark iii is pretty impressive. I’d recommend renting one and comparing.
Where are you locate? I’m in Los Angeles.

Renting one before liquidating anything sounds like a good idea. I am in the Dallas, Texas area.
