  • Should I convert my mp4 files and how?

I’m not someone with professional hopes or a desire to spend much. My Flip HD camera is plenty for my needs but I’ve read that its use of mp4 is part of why my previews aren’t super-smooth. It’s suggested in one thread that the files should be converted first.

I wondered if this can be done without loss of quality, because I’m more familiar with audio and have heard mp3 files converted to wma or vice versa degrading and thought similar things might happen with video.

I’ve used Any Video Converter to cut down some Sony Vegas avi files for YouTube, is this the sort of thing I should do? What about using Windows Live Movie Maker to import the Flip’s files and export them using its 720p setting? (Probably a bit wearing to use anything without a batch facility…)

Or what format/method/software should best be used?

    Thanks.

If you were working professionally I would say use Cineform NeoScene, but for personal use (with no cost) I would use Avidemux 2.5 to convert them to MJPEG AVI with PCM audio. If you really want lossless, use the Lagarith codec instead but the files will be much larger. Both formats should edit smoothly in Vegas.

Here are the options for Avidemux 2.5 with MJPEG and PCM.
