Should I convert AVCHD .mts to Pro Res QT?
I have more than an ample machine to power through 1080 24p AVCHD 24mbits from a GH2 camera – dual 6 core Xeon Mac with Quadro 4000 card. But i’m wondering is there any advantage to converting to pro res before i begin my editing in premiere?
The file size nearly quadruples when going to Pro Res LT from the MTS file, so is there any advantage to doing this in the editing process other than converting the frame rate to 29.97 during the conversion?

If your computer can handle AVCHD, then with Premiere there is not advantage to converting to Prores. Thats more a FCP workflow.

So just checking myself here. I’m editing all the 24p clips in 24p avchd timelines. This is going to TV so am I correct in my process of dropping the final edits 24p timeline into a 29.97 timeline and exporting from there?

I would check with the tv stations about their requirements. Never assume anything. You might not have to convert at all. Conversions can mess things up visually depending on how they are down.

Also I am curious if the native AVCHD retains the recorded timecode or if each clip will start at 00:00. If you convert to ProRes I am guessing you will get the timecode from the metadata…anyone concur?
You will need to do a 23.98 to 29.97 transcode for the stations. No station can accept 23.98 spots. Episode on the Mac does a good job with frame rate conversions and you might have to test the Premier Encoder.
