  • Should DVD be converted to HD?

Posted by Travis Stewart on November 7, 2010 at 2:59 am

From what I understand, most DVDs are 720×480. I wish to rip a DVD of mine to be edited in Final Cut Pro 7. Should I up-convert it to an HD ratio, like 1920×1080, or keep it at 720×480? I am planning to use Apple ProRes 422, since I want the best quality at decent editing speeds. I do wish for this to be able to play back on a HD TV. Any solutions? Thank you.

Upconverting won’t do anything. Its already 720×480 so the “damage” has already been done. Keep it 720×480

Note taken. What I also have a question for are dvds that are 720×480, but say they enhanced for HDTV. I would think a film that is 720×480 would have borders on both sides when watched on an HDTV, but not in this case. It fills the whole screen, like an HD film should. Should these also be taken in at 720×480, or does this require a different procedure? Is this simply the DVD or player being smart?

DVDs are being scaled by a chip in the player. The modern players all have very good chips for this now. Have you ever rented a Hollywood movie on DVD in recent years that looked really bad?

Quit worrying so much, SD DVDs are still standard all over and they often projected quite nicely onto giant movie screens.

I know I’m being cautious in this but I want to have all my ducks in a row before I proceed. I didn’t understand how the process works, at least having to do with SD being seen as HD. I’d rather not start a major project only to find out later I should’ve gotten more info before hand. Thank you, you’ve been a huge help and it’s great to know this community is here to provide help like this.
