We’re looking into beefing up our audio. Right now we have a piece of junk $75 mic. We’d like to jump much higher on the quality curve. We don’t really have a set budget, but are expecting to pay around $650 for a nice mic, and a little more for good accessories.

We need to be able to handle mostly indoor sets that are controlled, but certainly not sound stages (i.e., we shoot in kitchens). My hope is that a nicer mic + making heavy felt pads to drop echo will help a lot. We’re not audio guys, so we’re learning a LOT as we go.

Here’s an example of our current setup:

(Please note: It’s comedy about finding Jesus in a grilled cheese sandwich, and some NSFW language, but if you just watch the first 5 seconds, you should be able to see/hear what I’m talking about)

In more dampened environments, we do get decent audio:

So, my current thinking is that some felt mats would realllly help with that echo. But I think we still have noise and dynamic range issues.

    Here’s the mic I’m eyeballing:

    Any suggestions?

You’ll find a lot of posts on this subject in the Audio Professionals forum. Search over there for shotgun, cardioid and hypercardioid mics. In fact the top post over there right now is Shotgun vs. Cardioid: indoor use.
