Shot 24P. Need to edit for Broadcast delivery
Posted by Max Frank on January 23, 2011 at 2:52 pmHi,
I know this issue has been dealt with a lot – and I’ve read many of the posts on this 24p issue but
they have confused me even more. So, if I may ask this once again…
We shot our interviews on 7D & 60D – both at 24p.
I’m about to start transcoding to ProRes and need some advice:
1. The end product will be for DVD & Broadcast.
2. I had in mind to use MPEG Streamclip for all the transcoding.
3. What framerate should I set in MPEG Streamclip?
4. I assume that once I’ve transcoded, I should edit in a timeline with the exact
settings I’ve transcoded to, right?Any advice or improvements to my proposed workflow is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Wayne

January 23, 2011 at 3:40 pmYou edit in 24 P, and in your case that is 23.976
So the whole pipeline stays 23.976 untill the very last stage! After picture lock, scale down to a SD clip. (that is an art itself…)
you make your DVD 24P from there.
You then add normal pulldown (not advanced!) to the SD clip, and output to Digibeta.
But why on earth do you start something without knowing how to finish it?
I know it is only TV, but do you like having problems, or are you so confident that over here anything can be fixed?
Next time, find out your workflow BEFORE shooting, cause you WILL shoot yourself in the foot someday.Bouke

January 23, 2011 at 4:33 pmWhy scale down BEFORE you output? That makes no sense. Convert the footage to 1080p 23.98, since that is what you shot. Edit 1080p 23.98 ProRes. Output that thru a capture card….let the capture card do the downconvert as you output to Digibeta. Don’t know how to do that? Don’t have a capture card? Take it to a post house or person who has this card.
As for the DVD…Export a self contained file, take that into Compressor. Use one of the DVD presets. It will downscale for you. Far better than FCP will.

cause Digibeta is SD.
And, as i said, downscaling is an art.
I never said use FCP to downscale. And i don’t trust all capture cards to offer the quality of downscaling i have using other tools.Having a downscaled input file for DVD compression is a good thing, as it is faster on multiple passes / different settings.
Besides, not everyone does like Compressor. I never use it.
But you missed my most imporant point…
btw, did you get the Relink to work?

I know that. I’m not stupid. But I say downscale WHILE you are outputting. DOn’t let FCP do it. It does a worse job of the three choices: Hardware, Compressor, FCP. Hardware will always be better.
[Bouke Vahl] “And i don’t trust all capture cards to offer the quality of downscaling i have using other tools.”
I never had an issue with AJA or Matrox hardware. And they work in real time, as you output, vs After Effects that takes a while. Plus, yes, your downscale might look great in FCP, but once you put it on tape, does it look any better than the hardware output in real time? My experiments say no. But, the workflow is up to the user. We are giving them options. I output hundreds of show deliverables to networks via hardware output…no issues. no complaints.
[Bouke Vahl] “btw, did you get the Relink to work?”
It didn’t work due to the fact that the original project had a different frame rate. The person doing the promo converted all the captured files to 1080i 29.97 from the DVCPRO HD 720p60 files. Who knows why…because they wanted 1080 perhaps? So the relink didn’t work.

January 24, 2011 at 9:02 amThanks for the valuable feedback Gents, much appreciated.
By the time I had come onto the project, quite a bit of material had already been shot at 24P, so we kept the frame rate the same with the others.
Your points [and admonishments] are well taken.
Thanks,
Wayne
