  • Shortening video clips to conserve space

Just shot a bunch of video.
D/L’d to external hard drive via FCP.
Didn’t I/O in FCP before doing it so clips are way long and take up a lot of drive space.
How can I go back, choose a clip, select the sections I want to keep (all much shorter), save them, then delete the much lager originals to regain some space?
    Thanks from a noob who will I/O in FCP in the future :^}

    Hi Michael,
Put the clips in a sequence with the same settings and clean the clips.
Then use Media Manager to export (Copy option in MM) the stuff that you have selected.
There is no rendering needed, just to write the shorter files.
When you are sure that everything is there, delete the original.
    Cheers,
    Rafael

    Rafael:
I did as you suggested, and everything went smoothly until I tried to import one of the clips into FCP, and they were all ‘grayed out’.
When I double clicked on them in their folder, FCP opened but only the Browser and the Viewer windows opened. The clip can be played, but that’s all.
    Have I missed a step?
I have a bunch of very usable clips now that seem to be without a home 8^)
    Thanks for all your help.

    Rafael:
I think I figured it out.
    I open my main project.
I then open the individual clip by double-clicking on it in its folder.
It shows up in my Browser Window in my main project as a separate tab.
I move it to the Canvas Window, do any fine tuning, then insert into the time line.
    Voila! The clip is there.
If there are any better ways to accomplish this, please let me know.
But meantime, thanks for your guidance.
