Short capture taking up too many gigs of space on external hard drive
I’m running into an issue capturing to my external hard drive in that a short (10min) capture is taking up nearly 40 Gigs of space on the hard drive. Can anyone tell me if I have a setting incorrect or if my hard drive is not formatted properly or what the heck is going on? I don’t run into the issue every time, but am wondering what the cause is.

It sounds like you are saving/have saved more than one project (media) to the same place. A 10 min project should take up around 1.5gigs, depending on efx, rendering, etc. BUt 40 gigs seems a little high. You need to look in the capture scratch folder to see if you recognize different video files hiding in there. If it looks OK, then you should check your other folders to see which ones have a lot of gigs in them.

Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the problem. I had 40Gs of space right before capture, then the computer froze when I tried to escape the Capture Now function. After a force quit of the application I noticed I was down to 6 Gs of space. I trashed the capture, restarted the computer, did a Log and Capture this time, and ended up only using 7 Gs for the capture this time. I don’t run into this problem often, but on occasion. Any other thoughts on what could be causing the problem?

You might also want to try using an easy setup.
If you are capturing DVNTSC for example then use the easy setup for DVNTSC and you will see a dramatic reduction in file size.

Could be that you’re capturing with “capture now” and you have set you’re capture limit to “none”. This was a common problem in FCP 4, because the system took up all available space on a disk to make sure you can capture “forever”.
In the “system settings” in the FCP menu, set “Capture now” limit to… 15 minutes.
