  • Shooting/Editing 3D?

Posted by James Whittington on March 4, 2011 at 8:06 pm

Does anyone have much experience shooting and editing 3D? Forgive my ignorance on this as it is completely new to me!

It was brought up by a client that they were interested in possibly running few :15 or :30 ads before IMAX 3D movies. Problem is they are a pro bono client so there is very little money.

I am an editor by profession and done a reasonable amount of shooting. Obviously never in the 3D world though. Is it totally unreasonable to consider renting lower end 3D camera, shooting this myself, and then editing it? Or is this a process that an expert 3D shooter/editor is absolutely required?

Sorry…just trying to figure out if this is a world I should even attempt to dive into or if I should just explain that it is not possible with little to no budget.

    Thanks!

The adds shown before movies may not be using the same projector do the theater may not even be able to show your ad in 3D.

Have them check with the theater before sinking money into shooting in 3D.

FCP certainly doesn’t have any 3D features, either. I think there are some anaglyph plugins you can get, but IMAX theatres aren’t projecting anaglyph 3D anymore – it’s polarized. So you’d have to find a different software to work with, anyway.

Dashwood do have 3D plugins for FCP. Demo versions are included in the Noise Industry’s package. I haven’t used them but I am pretty sure they are polarised based tools.

There is also Neo 3D from Cineform which a kind of ‘system wide’ software for 3D. It allows to switch thru all possible 3D options in most applications within the menu bar — once the clips have been linked in the Neo 3D app.
