shooting with DVX-100a and HVX-201a on same shoot
I was called to bring my HVX-201A camera with two 32g P2 cards to a theater to record a play as the second camera. Primary camera was the DVX-100a. That camera was recording SD on a mini-dv tape, according to the owner. I had the option of shooting on mini-dv but using the P2 cards I could get the whole very long production without having to change tapes as would be needed on the DVX-100a.
My P2 choices (camera native PAL purchased in Austria) were 576i at 25p, 576i at 50i, 720p at 25PN, 720p at 25p, 720p at 50p, 1080i at 25p, and 1080i at 50i. His DVX-100a was NTSC running at 24 frames per second. He also edits in a version of Final Cut earlier than mine which is the latest version of Pro Studio issued for European users.
He was so concerned with compatibility of the footage between the 2 cameras that he wound up cancelling the shoot for that night. I told him that we definitely should shoot some tests to see how my P2 card options would fit into his project. I don’t know his sequence preset for capture but he told me his edit sequence is set for a 16X9 widescreen DVD output.
One of his big concerns was my 25 progressive frame rate. I told him I was sure, if his version of Final Cut didn’t handle it, that my version of Final Cut could convert the 25 frame rate to match his SD 24 frames without his fear of “speeding up” the footage. That if nothing else I could give him .mov’s whose frame rate would intercut with his. Keeping in mind that we are both shooting the same action and dialogue, but one camera wide, my camera for closer action. And that he would want to use the audio track he was recording at 24 frames.
So, since I pretty new with my camera and have not tried to conform to the DVX-100a tape SD format in the field, what do you experts say about bringing my camera enough in spec to his to allay his fears of non-compatibility in the Final Cut editing phase?
thanks for any direct experience!
