Shooting to tape on HVX cameras…
Hi all,
I’m looking at upgrading to an AG HVX-200 at some point in the next few months, and have a few concerns about my storage.
I shoot a lot of different stuff, but the main focus at the moment is action sports, which requires several very long days (usually a 7 day week non-stop), with each day including everything from interviews to being halfway up a mountain in the middle of nowhere. Lots of outdoors, lots of no power, and lots of footage.
The P2 card storage solution doesn’t seem a)quite ready for this use yet and b) cheap enough (yep, budgets are nasty things).
So, I know the camera can shoot to tape, but which tapes – miniDV only, or can it shoot to DVCProHD too? will I be able to use all of the fancy gizmos (like variable frame rates) when shooting to tape?
Any help would be much appreciated,

The included tape deck is strictly for DV Standard definition. If you want to shoot high definition you are recording to P2 or a Firestore.

Recording to tape is Mini-DV only. You can’t do the fancy frame rate stuff with DV only. But you can combine P2 with tape in some creative ways. You can transfer P2 shots to DV in the camera to take advantage of some of that off-speed capability and this could be a good option for you. You should download the manual from Panasonic and check it out. “The HVX Book” by Barry Green is also a good resource.
