Hey Everyone, this is more of a conceptual issue but I’m sure editing will play a huge role. I hope I can get some good advice.
I’d like to shoot a scene in which my main character ‘steps’ from the present time into a past scene of older footage. I have footage of my lead character at an event shot last year. I would like to shoot him now wearing the same clothes and have him enter that scene. It could either be seamless or I think I’ve also seen something where the character kind of pushes his way into the scene. Either would work for me.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can accomplish this.

    Green screen / chroma key.

If you have not shot footage for this type of work before do some research on the techniques, there’s plenty online including here at Creative Cow.

Lighting is vital, not only for getting a good key but for making the key look authentic by matching the lighting style of the background you are keying into. Also lens focal lengths and camera lens height etc are important.

Getting a good technical is reasonably easy if you follow the rules, making the key look realistic is another ball game.

That’s great Phil, thanks! I figured I would have to do some keying. I’ve done it a few times before and have had moderate success but I could really use a great tutorial on achieving realism. If you know of any resources it would be really great.

I just typed “Green screen, chroma key, tutorials” into Google and got 58,100 listings.

Should keep you going for a while.

Try You Tube search for video tutorials too.
