you don’t mention what camera you are using. Most on board camera’s are only any use for capturing some surrounding ambience, but no real use in the real world because of their limitations. The onboard mic picks up the sound of the auto irus, the lens zoom servo and even your own hands clicking switches and adjusting the tripod. whenever possible, use a shotgun mic mounted on a proper noise isolating camera mount. Then make sure you put a good wind sock on it. When its windy, disarm the onboard mic and just use the shotgun. You can film in a gale this way.
