  • Shooting HD for SD projects – pan, scan and zoom?

Posted by John Ruddy on November 24, 2005 at 9:46 am

    Folks,

I’ve recently shot a PAL project on HD 1080i – the camera could so why not? Fairly dull interview stuff, nothing special.

Now my question is are there any drawbacks (apart from the increased workflow and diskspace usage) to using Vegas’ pan, zoom etc. on the intermediate files i’ve created to get a bit of life into the output? (instantly looks like the stuff’s been done in two takes).

The client only needs a SD product as we’re in the UK and HD hasn’t taken off yet. From what I can see the cropping that i’ve done so far gives no loss of quality to the final SD output.

Thought it’d be something for you all to ponder on a while.

This is one of the asdvantages of HDV shooting while we’re waiting for HD delivery methods.

You can zoom in a fair way and not reduce quality at all, so go for it!

    Peter,

Thanks for your swift response – up against it with the deadline so didn’t want to go down any blind alleys.

Hurrah!!! This has been something i’ve been trying to do with DV for years with mixed results. The HDV footage is a joy to work with – even the most subtle changes are adding so much life to what would otherwise be dull subjects.

Only problem is that I can se myself getting used to this way of working and when HD does eventually take over i’ll be back to the frustration of square one.

Anyway, off to make hay whilst the sun’s shining.

    Thanks again,

    Bigred

As Peter says, this is one of the advantages of shooting on HD for SD delivery. On my Vegas 6 Primer and Vegas 6 Companion videos, I have an example of a Lacross game where I use Vegas to pan and zoom as the players pass the ball.

The end result is that it looks like I’m such a good camera man, that I know where the ball will go BEFORE it’s passed 🙂

Know where you’re coming from. I’m not that great a camerman by a long way (prefer to record sound/direct/edit) so this has been a lifesaver. The static versions were sending me to sleep.

Not going to tell anyone who’s going to see the vid what I’ve done – they’ve commented today about how fluid it’s looking! Feel like I’m cheating but what the hey… 😉

This whole experiance has reinforced how much I love working with Vegas. Been with it pretty much since day one (I was already an experianced Acid user when they added this video window thingy) and have to double take every now and then to believe how far it’s come. No longer a micky mouse plaything to say the least.

    Big smiles all round!
