I have an upcoming job that will require me to produce a range of products, including clips for news, short stories for the web and DVDs. My preference is to shoot DVCProHD in 720p 24fps native because it looks good and keeps storage requirements to a minimum.

But I’ve been advised to avoid 24 fps and native settings for the news. At the same time, my other clients want the look of 24.

So, though I’m sure it’s asking the impossible, what’s the best advice for shooting one format to cover all bets? Or should I shoot 1080i and output various versions via FCP and Nattress filters.

Life used to be so simple.

I do love 24pN for the HVX camera. It’s great for the web and DVD. Also good if PAL conversion is needed. For the news it can be exported to 720p60 by Advanced Format Conversion in Compressor. I don’t shoot much for the news, but that would seem like a viable approach. If you need to go to tape, there are many other possibilities, depending on the VTR in question and whether you have a capture card.
