Shootin with Sony PD-170, Audio buzz Removal with FCP/Soundtrack.
Hi, I shot interior documentary footage with this camera and an external Schoeps MK41 mic, going through a mixer, and into the XLR sockets on the camera. My sound guy didn’t hear any hisss or buzz (he was monitoring through his mixer), but I hear it clearly in post. I was not also monitoring through the camera, as I now realize I should have. It may have been the audio flaw in the Sony camera that I’ve heard about.
Is there something I can do in FCP to remove the buzz and keep as much of my subject’s voice range as possible? He has a nice deep bass voice, if that helps. Thanks very much. – Rob

If you have an earlier version than FCP 5, you need to use other software to remove this noise effectively.
This is the kind of “continuous” noise that a program like Bias “SoundSoap” can help remove.

SoundSoap was retailing for about $50 (up to $80 just before the new “2” release).
SoundSoap 2 is priced at about $100.If you have FCP5, there is a similar supplied filter that can do the job similar to SoundSoap.

Soundtrack can do a remarkably good job of removing noise if it’s at a constant pitch, you should be able to maintain the bass tone of the voice as well – try it!

And for a quick fix with one constant frequency you can use the 3 band EQ. Isolate the offending frequency
by scrolling the freq bar up and down while the audio is playing and
set it to -20db. If it’s mostly on one frequency, it shouldn’t hurt the overall audio. I just did it with a noisy lav,
the buzz was at 8,940. I kept the band narrow and lowered that freq to -20, and it was a quick fix right in FCP.

Soundtrack Pro will do this job easily and quickly. It takes a bit of practice but study the seciton in the manual for PROCESSING. What you’re going to do is tell STP what you want filtered out by selecting a small portion of room tone. Then you apply that process to the entire clip. It’s scary magic.
