  • Shoot in 4k, edit in 1080p

Posted by Anand Prahash on August 26, 2014 at 6:08 pm

Hi all, so I am new to shooting in the 4k resolution and Adobe Premiere Pro. FYI, I have Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014. So, I am shooting in 4k but editing in a sequence with the resolution set to 1920×1080. I would like to know by what percent can I scale in without losing quality? If I want to scale in without losing quality do I have to edit in a 4k sequence?

    Thanks.

I would definitely edit in 4K. You can export to any resolution after that, including 1080P.

If your master is 1080p anyway, I would edit in a 1080p sequence so you can take advantage of reframing/stabilizing if necessary.

When you will add your 4K clip in your sequence, in your clip Effect Control/Motion tab, a scale of 100 means you will use the maximum zoom in quality if you want. Depending on your 4K pixels count, a scale of around 50 will fill your 1920X1080 frame with your 4K footage.

Add a clip to your timeline, right click and select Set to Frame Size. Start there. Not Scale to Fame Size.

To answer your question – if the footage is sharp then I’ve got up to 350% zoom in the timeline without any loss, however it’s easy to be slightly out of focus in 4K!

No sig on my posts as it’s apparently very old fashioned
