What does shift fields filter do. Why ,when i import a graphic file into FCP, does it have this filter. And i realise that if that filter is there my alpha won’t work… Only when i delete the filter can i see the first layer.

So my question is: What is shift fields? Is shift fields like avid invert or upper fields and lower fields?
    what does it do?
Y does that filter sometime appear when i import graphic files?
How do i import it without that filter in it? Has it got something to do with my settings?
ANd lastly why does it affect my speed up or down clips giving a flickering and ghosting effect..

There isn’t a “Shift Fields” filter in FCP, so must be something you are adding to a clip before you import it (from where BTW?). When you double click a clip, you see this filter in the filters tab? What are it’s parameters?

There is a shift fields filter… It is in the video filters > Video Menu.

    It’s options are:

    +1
    none
    -1

And it effect is basically to swop field orders around. Final cut seems to automatically apply it to any clip that you add to a sequence with a different field order.

So I I add a DV PAL clip (lower field first) to a 8bit Uncompressed sequence (upper filed first) FCP adds the filter with a -1 setting to make the fields match. Or at least that’s how it seems to work here!

I stand corrected alright, the manual says nada about it.

But apparently it’s changing the field order and moving a field later or earlier. That would explain why it jitters in slow mo.. I’d simply remove this if there’s no jitter in playback of an imported animation, and it shouldn’t be in a still image at all wouldn’t think.

Yah there isn’t one in stills. But my motion graphics seem to have it. So what fields should i send my graphics out as….So if i get a +1 all the time what does that means?

Have you tried removing the filter entirely? If the clip looks OK with the filter on then leave it on. If the clip looks OK with it off then leave it off…?
