  • shift field filter?

Posted by Paul Nevison on May 3, 2007 at 10:54 am

    hey there

can anyone explain why FCP is adding a shift field filter to all of my clips when i add them to the timeline. This seems to happen regardless of codec and sequence settings.

    any ideas?

    thanks

    Gary,

I understood that’s what the filter is trying to do and is designed to do. It doesn’t explain why it is incorrectly adding the filter as both my capture settings and sequence settings match (DVCPRO 50 PAL), and that’s my real question not what does this filter do, which may not have been clear enough in my original post.

I imagine the answer to this incorrect application of the auto shift field feature could take rather more than 5 seconds to solve, hence the post to my peers.

FCP has a nasty habit of “over interpreting” things and applying filters like shift fields to help make video playback more correctly in a chosen timeline. At least what it thinks it needs to do to make the video playback correctly in the chosen timeline.

in your case, I believe FCP is thinking your video is NTSC and is applying the Shift Field to reverse interlace your video OR it thinks your video was capture uncompressed and is shifting fields to ensure smooth playback in a DV50 timeline.

If you’re truly capturing DV50 PAL and then truly editing in a DV50 PAL timeline, this filter should not have been applied at all, even with this “over interpreting” behavior. I suspect something doesn’t match between your clips and timeline.

For instance, we’re conforming an SD show to HD right now. NTSC SD is lower field first, HD 1080i/60 is Upper Field First. So when we captured all the clips, FCP threw a “Shift Fields” filter on all the HD video thinking we needed it to revert to lower field first. We simply did a Select All and Remove Attributes > Filters to get rid of this filter for the entire timeline in one shot. BUT there was a valid reason why FCP threw that filter on there, the field order for the HD timeline was reverse of the original SD clips so it was interpreting a need.

I’ve never seen FCP throw a filter onto a clip for absolutely no reason at all, there’s usually some logic, like a Clip / Sequence mismatch to trigger this behavior.

Only happens to us when we use animation codec files (which FCP always thinks are upper field first…)

Capturing to DV50 PAL works fine for us – both your sequence and clips are definately set to lower field first?

    Hey Guys

thanks for all your input. i’m sure there is some logic as to why FCP is doing this, just trying to figure out which logic that is and where it is getting confused.

I am capturing via SDI to the PAL DVCPRO 50 codec rather than firewire, which I’m thinking may be the culprit.

As you said Walter, it’s easy to fix by selecting all and removing attributes. I guess I’m just trying to figure out what is causing FCP to interpret the clips this way and whether what I am doing is influencing that process.

PS enjoyed your iv with AJA’s big cheese…..an IO HD added to your shop in the near future perhaps? looks like a killer piece of kit.

Thanks! Nick is an awesome guy and one of the most laid back people I know. Not sure we’ll need the Io HD as we already have Kona 3’s in the shop so that would just duplicate what we have unless we have a need to fully go portable with Green Screen work.

oh yes of course forgot you were all Kona 3’d out …maybe for that mobile rig of yours?

One question I had about ProRes 4:2:2 is that while it’s built specifically for post, do you loose all that goodness when it comes to delivery? Obviously not when going out to HDCAM or higher but what if your tape options are DVCPRO HD? All that 10 bit goodness gets crushed into the 8bit world of DVCPRO HD….more a thinking out aloud to myself as I was eyeing up ProRes as our main post codec….hmmmm more thinking to do i guess!

Who knows? It’s not out yet so I haven’t done any work with it yet. I’ll be testing the Apple ProRes 422 vs. DVCPro HD workflow as soon as I get a copy of FCP 6 here.

let us know your findings Walter, will interesting for a lot of users no doubt. I don’t think we will be upgrading straight away, which is a pain as i could use some of the new features, though i guess we get the benefit of the experiences of the early 1.0 beta adopters!

I plan to do a full report for either the Cow Reviews or the Magazine so keep your eyes open.
