Shellshock & CatDV Servers
Just a reminder from your friends at North Shore, for those of you running OS X and Linux servers. The Shellshock vulnerability is real and systems are being compromised.
We know that as Mac/Linux admins we can all get complacent since there aren’t many issues, so this is a gentle, but serious reminder.
We’ve had a few customers contact us who got hit with minor, but still troubling, malware.
Apple released updates for 10.7-10.9 and you should run them.
PATCHES
OS X bash Update 1.0 may be obtained from the following webpages:
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1767 – OS X Lion
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1768 – OS X Mountain Lion
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1769 – OS X MavericksThe article below shows you how to check both OS X and Linux systems.

After this is done, we recommend you install and run a trusted virus scanner to make sure no malicious code got onto your box before it was patched.
This incident underscores the importance of regular system maintenance and oversight. As much as we try to empower video departments, these are servers, not editing systems, and there need to be processes in place to ensure their security and stability. Keep and eye on your systems, or engage people who will handle that for you.
