Shatter question…
Posted by Dave Navarro on June 7, 2008 at 10:42 pmIf I create a custom shatter map to split up an image, can I manipulate each of the individual pieces in 3D space?

June 8, 2008 at 12:33 amThis exact effect is what I am looking to duplicate:
Hopefully without creating dozens of layers for each individual piece. Was hoping to cheat and create a custom shatter map. 🙂

June 8, 2008 at 2:31 amI think this can be done by making each piece a different consecutive shade of grey and using gradient wipe. Each piece will wipe in order of lightness to darkness.
you can try other methods, but nothing seems to be a quick solution.

June 8, 2008 at 2:39 amI found something useful for 3D Studio that I might play with later.
At the moment, I’m playing with ProAnimator to see if I can get it to do that I want…
If not, I’ll probably just do it in 3D studio.

June 8, 2008 at 3:57 amProAnimator does some cool stuff.
Check this out… there is a tutorial on how to use the animation paths that proanimator generates to control custom layers.
lemme see…
You need to make sure you set up ProAnimator correctly though. Put the entire ProAnimator folder in the After Effects effects folder and use shortcuts or aliases to get to the program if you run it standalone. That way, your presets and textures and what have you will be available from both within After Effects and when using it standalone.
this is a cool way to use ProAnimator to get some really awesome motion in your animations.

Right now, I’m just playing with 2D masks in AE:
https://www.topekadesign.com/animation/cow_puzzle_test_01.mov
I grabbed the Cow logo from one of AR’s podcasts and looped it over 30 seconds. I created a puzzle mask in Photoshop using AV Puzzle Pro and saved it as a PSD file with each layer having once piece of the puzzle.
I imported the PSD file then created 9 comps (1 for each piece of the puzzle) using each piece as a luma matt. Then dropped all 9 comps into my main comp and played with the positions as shown…
I still need to move the anchor point of each piece to the center and then I’ll start playing with some 3D motions. I also need to change all of the puzzle piece comps to use a single main comp for footage, so that I can quickly drop in any footage to overlay on the pieces.
I’m sure it’s all been done before… but it got my brain pan working…

But you’d need a separate application of Shatter for each piece. But Shatter is a 3d simulation on a 2d layer so they won’t all stack up nicely like you probably imagine.bogiesan
This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
