    I have tried google, trust me, and i cannot find the answer.

    Im trying to shatter an image that i have imported in to AE. The image is pretty small and has its own little stupid box around it and when i apply the effect the shattering is limited to inside the box of the image. Probably an easy one if you have worked with ae a while but not for me. Heres a video where they do what want to do

    Like most things in AE there is more than one way to do this.
    You could use the Grow Bounds effect.
    Or you could precompose the layer and make that precomp whatever size you want.

    in addition to grow bounds, another effect that will do the same thing is cc repetile, just set the tiling to ‘none’. this then allows you to expand the layer in specific directions (up, down, left, right) rather that in all directions which can help to overcome some ram hurdles…
