  • Shatter effect and pre-composing a layer within a comp…

Posted by Joe Moya on April 24, 2009 at 2:08 am

I thought I read information about how to use the Shatter effect correctly… but, undoubtedly I did not…

I have a composition which has one layer that has a shatter effect. I precomposed the layer leaving attributes in the current comp. Then added another layer with a Shatter Effect. The added layer is invisible unless I remove the Shatter effect in the precomposed layer. It seems precomposing a layer does not negate the Shatter effects limitations.

How do you add layers with the Shatter effect within the same comp? Obviously, pre-composing the layers does not work… only option I can think of is to render the project one layer at a time (…which would be a bad idea since you can’t make changes with rendered layers).

What am I missing with this Shatter effect (which I little experience) and it’s multiple use within a single composition?

BTW, I am using a layer created in Photoshop and imported. And the precomposing uses the Camera System preset in Shatter as Camera Position.

    BUG?

Try and copy a shatter effect applied to a layer image…make sure the Shatter View is Set to Render and the Pattern is Custom with a Custom Shatter Map equal to the current layer (i.e., layer 1.)
Then, apply another image to a new layer…
Now, copy previous shatter effect to new layer… Layer will disappear.
    Solution?
    Go to second layer…
change View to Layer… the copy (or at least my copy) defaults to Wireframe + Forces… and, Pattern will be Brick with no Custom Shatter Map.

Change View to Layer to – Render… then, Pattern to custom and set Custome Shatter Map to current new layer (i.e., 2.)

Now – the shatter layer is visable.

It appears copy of Shatter does not copy View, Shape Patten and Custom Shatter Map. Shatter copies from previous layers when pasted to a new layer defaults to Shatter presets for these (and perhaps others… haven’t check this out) elements. This results in the layer disappearing since the layer had no defined pattern and/or render format. This is why pre-composing will not fix this disappearing act.

This only took me a few hours to figure out…

Compund Effects, such as Shatter, do not copy over ‘3rd layer’ information. Saving your settings as an Animation Preset should sot things out.
