Sharing Projects Between Intel and Power PC
Posted by Chris Babbitt on October 8, 2006 at 3:41 pmCan I share a project between an Intel machine and a Power PC Mac as long as I’m working in the same version of FCP? I’m trying to find a short-term solution to the problem of not being able to use AE plug-ins in the Intel machine.

October 8, 2006 at 5:21 pmI just spoke with a guy at the MAC store. He said that as long as you are using FCP 5.1, the EDLs should transfer between a POWER MAC and a MAC BOOK PRO…
I want to purchase a MAC BOOK PRO but I need to know for sure that the EDLs can switch BACK & FORTH between these two computers.
Can anybody confirm this. The guy at the MAC store was only 99% sure that the EDLs go both ways.. I need 100% conformation.
thanks
for any help.. -

October 8, 2006 at 6:21 pmEDL’s are just text. As for project files, I’ve already exchanged and they’ve worked just fine, but you might have to update your project if it’s coming from a previous version (like 5.1.1 to 5.1.2, for instance).

October 8, 2006 at 11:50 pmThank you..
Please clarify.. The individual FCP icons on my desktop (different projects)….Is that a “project file” or is that an EDL.. I always thought that the icon I double click to open individual FCP projects was called an EDL…
cheers

October 9, 2006 at 7:07 amNo. An EDL is a relatively limited form of interchange between different editing systems, transferring information about edits and a few standardized effects.
The project file holds all the information about your project, i.e. all edits, all effects and all the links to your media sources. If you used logging and batch capture (and still have the originals), you can reconstruct your whole project from this file. But it’s strictly FCP and version specific (not backward-compatible), but hardware agnostic.

It’s a Project File. EDL is a “Edit Decision List” file you Export from FCP for use in another application such as Avid.
