Since FCPX does only read motiontemplates from localusers home folder and inside movies only, here is the trick…:

Create a symbolic link to a shared location, NOT an alias, but symbolic link….

open terminal, do a cd to your movies folder

    remove motion templates

    and type in:

    ln -s /Volumes/SharedDisk/folderForTemplates/ Motion Templates.localized

pay attention to .localized I had to put this on otherwise it would not do it.

Now open fcpx and it reads motiontemplates from the shared location.

(Thanks to Lars Petter for getting me on the right track)

    cheers Helge Tjelta

Hi Helge, this is exactly what I am attempting to do, but can’t duplicate from your instructions. Can you please check them carefully and make sure they are complete and exactly correct? Thanks!

I figured out the problem: I was not entering the path to the disk correctly. I dragged the Motion Templates folder into the Terminal window after typing ln -s and then got the correct path, which worked. Thanks!

    Greetings all-

I’m starting to test this on our Xsan environment as well. I’m curious to know what happens if more than one user is accessing the folder at the same time and someone generates new content (title, transition, filter, etc.)- do the other editors see this update live or do you only see it upon relaunching FCP? Also, what happens if more than one user is working from the same template at the same time?

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hey Mark-

It seems to work, but it’s risky. Since there’s no server-side management of the files, there is always the possibility that another editor will open and modify a project that you are using in a project. This is a big hole in the workflow for FCP X editors working in a shared environment, and one that I hope Apple closes soon.

    Thanks,
    Bill
