  • Sharing compositions without importing entire projects

I’m working on a large project with dozens of different AE projects and a number of shared elements within these projects.

I would like to be able to share SPECIFIC COMPOSITIONS between different projects so I can utilize the render que more efficiently. I realize that I can import entire projects into other projects, but the stuff I’m dealing with is big, and it gets to be pretty cluttered in the project window when I’m only looking for one or two elements from these other giant projects.

I’ve also been isolating and pre-rendering the elements, but that clogs my machine for the time it takes to render out that one piece of one project, and then I’ve got to render the next element. the inefficiency is driving me mad.

Can anyone help me out? I can find the answer elsewhere, but I’m swamped (aren’t we all) and I’m not in the position to sit here at my station with the manual for a while.

    Thanks.

The way you are suggesting is not possible.

    Some Suggestions…
    1. Open the project from which you want to sample from and delete everything you don’t want (make a copy first if you can) then resave as a project then import this into your other project
    2. After importing the project delete extra elements. You can right click on items and go down to reveal in composition and if nothing appears or the comp you want doesn’t appear you can delete it becuase it isn’t part of what you need.
    3. in the future perhaps make a project for each element then you can import this as neede.

Sorry it’s not a perfect solution but i’ve felt your pain,
    Andrew

The File/Reduce Project is a great way to trim a project down to just the elements used in the comps you want to keep.
Just select the comp(s) you want to keep in the project window and then select the command.

If you want to pre-render elements that are used in later compositions it’s best to queue them first, set the post-render action to “Set as Proxy” and then queue the other comps that use that element. The later renders will use the pre-rendered proxy not the composition. Just make sure that the later renders are set to “Use all proxies” or “Current Settings”. That way you can queue it all and go home rather than wait for the precomps to render and swapping the element back in!! The other great thing about this way is that you can always get back to the comp that created the pre-rendered element. (If you’re confident that won’t be a problem you could set the pre-render to “Import and Replace Usage”, the end result is the same but I prefer the proxy as it keep the whole build intact)
