  • Sharing a broadcast monitor – DeckLink & Quantel Paintbox

Got a question to pose to you BMD gurus..

I’ve currently got a DeckLink Pro monitor outputted to a Sony BVM-20G1E via YUV component. It works a treat.

HOWEVER..I still have some archived work on our old Quantel Paintbox which I occasionally need to access, so I tried to hook up the Decklink to the spare component input on the paintbox, so I could share the monitor without having to patch/unpatch it everytime I need to view the Paintbox. This works upto a point…

However when I minimise an app that is using the Decklink output (when hooked up via P/Box) it seems to lose sync and what would usually be a solid black when an app is minimise is now black & white rapidly vertically scanning lines (enough to make you throw up if you look for too long!)
Also, in Photoshop for instance, if I say move a layer or toggle it’s visibility on & off – the Broadcast monitor flickers and pulses…even though I haven’t refreshed or touched the export hotkey.

When connected directly to PC without Quantel it works fine.
    Any ideas?

Oh – one thing to note. When viewing Decklink output via P/Box the b/cast montitor needs to be set to RGB input (as that is what P/Box uses) Whereas when direct it obviously needs to be set to YUV. Just thought this might affect things? I have two saved colour spaces on the monitor to swtich between so that’s not a problem. Just wondering why the sync slips in and out?

Essay over! Hope someone can help!

    Ta, Jim.

    Hi Jim,

I’m not sure what is causing the problem. Are all three pieces of hardware genlocked, ie the DeckLink card, the Quantel Paintbox system and the Sony BVM-20G1E monitor? That would probably help.

The DeckLink Pro outputs YUV video so I’m not sure how that might affect the Paintbox system if it is affecting RGB but it does seem like a potential source of problems.
