Hi, I am shooting on DVCPro tape, Editing on two MacPros. I want to share the material between the two macs and was wondering what the best shared storage device is that will use the native network card already in the macs.

Thank you in advance for any help.

    Kind regards

    Daniel

I think I would suggest duplicating the media to a second drive named exactly the same. That way, you can exchange projects without reconnection issues, as long as the mount point is the same: /Volumes/DRIVENAME.

Depending on your network and your source footage and/or your number of streams, sharing over ethernet might not be the best solution. But if you insist, maybe try connecting the machines directly with a CAT5e/CAT6 rated cable and turn on file sharing on the machine that is hosting the media in System Preferences. You can cut out the router/switch if you don’t need it, that might help a little with speed depending on your hardware…

If you want to edit via Ethernet, we’re having a shared storage system set up right now. 6 systems will be able to play HD ProRes HQ off the same SAN. No extra software, just all runs off a SmallTree switch. I never believed this was possible until Bob Zelin told me about it. I’ll have an article upcoming on the entire installation and setup.

If you’re looking for something really cheap, just digitize all the media to one drive and then copy it over for the second workstation. Just connected to computers to one drive via Ethernet won’t work very well.
